Core Principle
Character design must serve the plot engine and selling point. Start from what the story requires the protagonist to do repeatedly, then infer personality, weakness, strategy, and growth.
Execution

Read the plot and hook
- Ask: what behavior will this story reward?

Infer the protagonist engine
- If the hook rewards indirect control, the protagonist may be cautious, clever, shameless, or strategic.
- If the hook rewards confrontation, they may be decisive, hot-blooded, or stubborn.

Add contradiction
- Give the protagonist a useful trait and a flaw created by the same trait.

Define repeated behavior
- Describe what the protagonist does again and again that makes the book recognizable.
