"name": "jim-contribution-framing",
"description": "Use when articulating what a Journal of International Marketing (JIM) manuscript contributes — converting results into theory advances for international marketing and decisions for border-crossing managers, and defending against the \"context extension\" verdict. It frames the payoff; jim-writing-style polishes the prose."

Contribution Framing (jim-contribution-framing)
When to trigger
- The findings are solid but the contribution paragraphs read as a results summary
- Someone on the team describes the paper as "X, but international"
- The implications section advises managers to "consider cultural differences"
- An Insight-format submission (<4,000 words) must justify itself on one finding
JIM's double gate
A JIM contribution has to clear two bars at once, and the first is the journal's signature:
- Theory bar: the international dimension must have changed the theory. After your study, what do we now understand about the mechanism that a purely domestic research program could never have revealed? Acceptable shapes: a boundary condition that redraws where a "universal" mechanism holds; a reconciliation of conflicting country-specific findings via a theorized moderator; a construct or mechanism that only exists across borders (globalness perceptions, psychic distance, export capabilities). If the honest answer is "the theory survived intact in more countries," you have a robustness note, not a JIM contribution — return to
jim-theory-development. - Managerial bar: a decision rule for firms operating across borders. JIM's founding mission (and the criterion behind its Cavusgil Award) is advancing international marketing practice. The implication must name the decision — enter or wait, standardize or adapt, which appeal in which market profile, how to allocate across subsidiaries — and attach the magnitude and the country conditions under which it holds.
Write the contribution ledger before the discussion section
| Finding | What it changes in theory | Whose decision it changes | Under which country conditions |
|---|---|---|---|
| (each headline result) | the stream + the specific revision | CMO / export manager / brand manager / platform seller | dimension profile, not country names |
Rows with an empty theory cell are results, not contributions; rows with an empty decision cell are academic trivia by JIM's standards. Two or three complete rows beat six padded ones.
Phrase the country conditions as profiles, not passports
The generalization engine of a JIM paper is the dimension, not the sampled countries. Frame implications as "in markets with weak contract institutions and high collectivism…" rather than "in Vietnam…" — this converts a two-country study into guidance for the dozens of unsampled markets that share the profile, and it is the honest scope of what the design identified. State the boundary of the license too: which profiles the data cannot speak to.
Defenses against the standard verdicts
- "Context extension." Show the theory-revision cell of the ledger: name the prediction that failed, the boundary that moved, or the inconsistency that resolved. If reviewers can delete the theory section without losing the results, the framing has not done this.
- "Managerial implications are generic." Ban sentences convertible to any paper ("managers should be aware of culture"). Each implication needs an actor, an action, a magnitude, and a condition.
- "Why should domestic-marketing scholars care?" One paragraph exporting the insight back: what the cross-national evidence reveals about the mechanism everywhere (e.g., the domestic effect was a special case of a broader institutional contingency).
- "The finding is obvious." Show the counterfactual prediction a reasonable scholar would have made from the domestic canon — and that your data reject it.
Insight papers
JIM's short format (under 4,000 words, all inclusive; expedited review — re-check current terms on the AMA guidelines page) trades depth for one sharp, decision-relevant finding. The framing discipline tightens: a single ledger row, stated in the first paragraph, with the managerial decision rule as the headline and theory positioned in two paragraphs at most. Do not compress a rejected full paper into the format; the genre is different, not smaller.
Checklist
- Ledger complete: every claimed contribution has theory cell + decision cell + condition cell
- The international dimension demonstrably changed the theory (not just the sample)
- Implications phrased as dimension profiles with named actors, actions, magnitudes
- Scope boundary stated: which market profiles the design cannot license
- The "export back to domestic theory" paragraph drafted
- Contribution claims match what the invariance evidence licenses (no mean-difference claims without scalar support)
- Insight submissions carry exactly one ledger row, stated up front
Anti-patterns
- "We extend X to the international context" as the lead contribution sentence
- Managerial implications that name no actor, no action, no number, and no condition
- Generalizing from two sampled countries to "global markets" without dimension-profile framing
- Contribution inflation: five bullets restating one finding
- Claiming a cross-national theory contribution the invariance results quietly revoked
- Advice managers already follow, presented as news
Output format

【Ledger】N complete rows (finding → theory → decision → condition)
【Managerial rule】actor + action + magnitude + market profile
【Scope】profiles licensed / profiles excluded
【Export back】one-line implication for domestic marketing theory
【Format】full paper / Insight (<4,000 words)
【Next skill】jim-tables-figures
