Why the cover letter matters at Nature Geoscience

Nature Geoscience is handled by professional in-house editors (no external editorial board), who desk-reject the majority of submissions before review. The cover letter is the editor-facing argument that the manuscript is a broad-interest Earth-system advance worth sending to referees. Two journal-specific facts shape it:

• There is no presubmission enquiry route. Nature Geoscience does not accept presubs, so the cover letter carries the full "why this, why here, why now" case that other journals let you test informally first.
• The cover letter is not seen by peer reviewers. It is written for the editor: candid about significance and fit, without the hedging you would use for a skeptical referee.

It is not an abstract, not a summary, and not a place to oversell. It is a concise, specific, editor-facing case for general interest.

Structure (concise, ~3–5 short paragraphs)

1. Submission line — title, that it is submitted to Nature Geoscience as an Article (or Brief Communication), and the broad topic area.
2. The headline advance — one or two sentences stating the single result plainly, with the key quantitative finding and its significance.
3. Why it is an Earth-system advance — what is new: a newly identified process, a decisive constraint, a resolved controversy, a dataset revealing a hidden signal. Tie it to a prior belief it changes.
4. Why it is of broad, cross-disciplinary interest — name the Earth-science communities beyond your subfield who will care and why. This is the paragraph editors weigh most.
5. Housekeeping — originality / not under consideration elsewhere; relation to any prior preprint (e.g. ESSOAr/EarthArXiv) or conference version; data/code availability status; suggested and excluded referees (per ngeo-referee-strategy); whether you opt into double-blind review; any related manuscripts under consideration.

The broad-interest paragraph (the load-bearing one)

• Be specific: "This bears on [neighboring field] because [concrete process/transfer]," not "this is of broad interest to the geoscience community."
• Anchor importance to a change in understanding of the Earth system, not to a new regional record alone.
• If borderline, pre-empt the "this is a regional study, why not JGR?" reaction by stating explicitly what makes it cross-cutting and first-order.
• Emphasise quantitative evidence and grounding — that the advance rests on data (or a data-validated model) with quantified uncertainty.
• Keep it honest — editors discount inflated breadth or impact claims, and overreach can backfire.

Anti-patterns

• A cover letter that just restates the abstract
• Asserting "broad interest to the geoscience community" with no concrete audience
• Overselling significance or impact the manuscript does not support
• Omitting the broad-interest argument (the single most common miss at a triage-heavy journal)
• Hiding a prior preprint the editor will find anyway
• Forgetting there is no presub safety net — the letter must carry the full case
