Three.js is a JavaScript library for drawing in 3D with WebGL. It enables us to add 3D objects to a scene, and manipulate things like position and lighting. If you’re a developer used to working with the DOM and styling elements with CSS, Three.js and WebGL can seem like a whole new world, and perhaps a little intimidating! This article is for developers who are comfortable with JavaScript but relatively new to Three.js. Our goal is to walk through building something simple but effective with Three.js — a 3D animated figure — to get a handle on the basic principles, and demonstrate that a little knowledge can take you a long way!

At Shopify, we develop a bunch of different React Native mobile apps: Shop, Inbox, Point of Sale, Shopify Mobile, and Local Delivery. These apps represent different business domains, but they often have shared pieces of functionality like login or foundational blocks they build upon. Wouldn’t it be great to leverage development speed and focus on important product features by reusing code other teams have already written? Sure, but it might be a big and time consuming effort that discourages teams. Usually, contributing to a new repo is more tedious and error prone in comparison to contributing to an existing repository. The developer needs to create a new repository, set up continuous integration (CI) and distribution pipelines, and add configs for Jest, ESint, and Babel. It might be unclear where to start and what to do.

My team, React Native Foundations, decided to invest in simplifying the process for developers at Shopify. In this post, I'll walk you through the process of extracting those shared elements, the setup we adopted, the challenges we encountered, and future lines of improvement.

The Fulfillment Platform is a foundational Uber domain that enables the rapid scaling of new verticals. The platform handles billions of database transactions each day, ranging from user actions (e.g., a driver starting a trip) and system actions (e.g., creating an offer to match a trip with a driver) to periodic location updates (e.g., recalculating eligible products for a driver when their location changes). The platform handles millions of concurrent users and billions of trips per month across over ten thousand cities and billions of database transactions a day.

In the previous article, we introduced the Fulfillment domain, highlighted challenges in the previous architecture, and outlined the new architecture.

When designing the new architecture, we converged on leveraging Google’s Cloud Spanner, a NewSQL storage engine to satisfy the requirements of transactional consistency, horizontal scalability, and low operational overhead. This article describes how we leveraged Cloud Spanner for planet-scale architecture without sacrificing consistency guarantees and with low operational overhead.

The framework achieves great coverage and performance across different incident triaging scenarios, and also outperforms other state-of-the-art root cause analysis methodologies.
